The Lead Seal of Georgius Manganes Proto-Proedros and Imperial Secretary | Artifact | The lead seal that belonged to Georgius Manganes was found in the narthex of the Yeni mosque in Bitola. On the obverse is a waist-length figure of St. George with curly hair in a warrior's suit with a round shield in his left hand and a spear in his right hand. On the reverse there are five lines of text which reads: Ἀθλητά, σῷζε τὴν γραφὴν τοῦ Μαγγάν[η]. In translation: O Athlete, preserve the writings of Manganes. The metrical verse refers to Georgios Managanes, proto-proedros of the Council at the Blacherna Palace in Constantinople in 1094 and later the personal secretary of Emperor Alexios I Komnenos (reigned 1081-1118). |
