Description
The Church of St. Mary is situated on the Island of Šipan, today in ruins.
Its a single nave edifice probably built in the 5th or 6th century. In the period between the 9th and the 11th century the Church was vaulted. There are no evidence of the existing dome. Thanks to the preserved transena, we date the building to the pre-Romanesque period.
In the 16th century, as part of the construction of the summer house of the bishops of Dubrovnik, the Church became a part of the residence now restored with Renaissance-style building interventions.
