Description
The Benedictine Monastery of St. Mary was erected in 1023, while the original Church of St. Mary may date or perhaps pre-date the above mentioned year. The original appearance of the complex and the stylistic affiliation of the Early Medieval buildings are not known.
Of the Early Medieval Monastery and Church, only four fragments of the lintel and frame of the opening are known, built into the existing assembly, which have not been thoroughly examined.
At the end of 12th or early 13th century, a three-apse Romanesque church of St. Mary was built on the same site.
In 1958, the complex was reorganized into the Biological Institute of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
