Description
At the end of the 13th century, Mashkjeza Castle was built as a Western European style castle on top of the ancient foundations. The castle was inhabited by a noble family related to the Anjou rulers of Albania. Coins of the Duchy of Athens, the Principate of Achaia, and the County of Tripolis have all been found within the castle and allow an datin between 1274 and 1301. Following the defeat of the Latins at the hand of the Byzantines, the castle was abandoned.
