The town of Kruja was first mentioned as bishopric see in the year 879 by Gjon Kastrioti. Kastrioti stated that the bishopric already existed in the 7th century. In 1165 Emperor Manuel I Komnenos grans several Privileges to the town, which were confirmed in 1253 by Emperor John III Dukas Vatatzes of Nikaia, in 1255 by Emperor Theodoros II Laskaris of Nikaia, in 1288 by Emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos and in 130 by Ohilipp of Tarent.
