The Fortress of Kukanj was first mentioned in the year 1423 in a Charter of Sandalj Hranić to the town of Dubrovnik. King Alfonso V of Naples and Emperor Friedrich III mentioned Kukanj in the Years 1444, 1454 and 1448 respectively.
