Split, Church of Saint Euphemia | Place | The Church of St. Euphemia was built shortly before the year 1069 and was part of a monastery complex of the Order of Saint Benedict. The church was originally dedicated to Saint Benedict. Both church and monastery were founded by Archbishop Lovro (reigned 1060-1099). The monastery was closed by the French in the year 1806 and turned into a military hospital by the Austrian Army. The whole complex fell victim to a fire in 1877. It was a three nave building with a dome, and three semicircular apses on the Eastern side. |
