Description

King Stefan Uroš II Milutin donated the settlement of Popovlïane near the Upper Town of Skopje to the Monastery of Saint George-Gorg (Popovlïane koi se obrětajutь vь Skopii gradě pod oblastiju svetago Geōrgiïa, i vь selěhь i vь vsěhь metohiïahь po duhovnoi oblasti, da ne meteha nikoi episkupь, ni dohodka uzeti ni zaprěšteniïa postaviti na popověhь svetago Geōrgiïa, razvě arhijepiskupu pomenь, a eksarhato svetomu Geōrgiju. The context of the donation of Popovlïane suggests that this settlement lies within the modern city to the north of the river Vardar and to the east of Kale, which formed the Upper Town of medieval Skopje.

Skopje Monastery of St. George 2 Source The Serbian King Stefan Uroš II Milutin (reigned 1282–1321) issued this charter after the refurbishment of the Monastery of St. George-Gorg near Skopje in the year 1300. He confirmed the donations given to the monastery by former Byzantine, Bulgarian and Serbian rulers. Finally, King Milutin also granted new privileges, landed property and population to the respective monastery.
